Productivity toys for the day

Filed under: Uncategorized — harshdeep @ 1:08 pm

Mayank recently introduced me to a pretty little thing called Launchy. It obviates the need to go looking for an application in Start->All Programs (It’s a Windows only utility). All you have to do is press Alt+Space and a cute little window pops up where you can enter the first few letters of the application you are thinking about. And voila! No need to reach for that mouse and scour the huge All Programs list. I’m not a Keyboard Nazi, but Launchy is definitely a productivity booster.

On a related note, I’ve been using AutoHotKey for quite some time. In its simplest form, you can use it to assign keyboard shortcuts for various applications, or documents. In this aspect, Launchy wins as you don’t have to manually set shortcuts for every application. But AutoHotKey comes with a full fledged script that provides a lot of customization power.

  1. On MAC, QuickSilver is there to do the same for you.
And on launchy, you dont even need to type the first few words in order, it only checks for the presence of the typed letters in the Name.
Like type vs, and you might get Visual Studio straight away, etc etc..

  2. You can do something similar with the search box in Google Desktop.
