A book of cartoons

Filed under: Cartoons — harshdeep @ 8:03 am

A book of cartoons by an Indian author is both rare and uninviting. It’s because the standard of Indian cartoons has been abysmally degraded by silly strips like Hum Tum that just stole jokes from forwarded emails.

The most famous Indian cartoonist is probably Mr. RK Laxman who has been running a cartoon strip for more than 50 years. But all he ever talks about is corrupt politicians and poor common man – it’s too repetitive.

Yesterday when I picked up a cartoon book by one Rajneesh Kapoor from the order counter in Barista, it was just out of curiosity – I wasn’t expecting anything. But this guy is surprisingly good! His jokes are fresh and he is in touch with the times. We ended up finishing the entire book over coffee and bought another volume of the series.

He’s definitely not in the league of, say, Scott Adams yet, but his strip asserts that the quality of cartoons in India is getting better.

He runs a daily strip, This is Our Life.

  2. […] Some time back, I’d written about Rajneesh Kapoor, a cartoonist working for Hindustan Times. Today, he mailed me that he met a girl in Barista who was buying one of his books. Supposedly she had read the review here. Small world! […]

  3. Ppl are still not realising it..but Rajneesh is the best thing to have happened in the Indian Cartoon industry..

I stick to HT mainly because of him 🙂

may his ilk prosper and provide more humor

  4. I guess I’m not the only one. HT city is a must read every morning because of ‘This is our Life’ (and of course Calvin and Hobbes). And I bought both his books too.

Wonder when he comes out with new ones? And his site seems to be down.

Any news on what he is up to these days?

  7. Thanks to this blog i was able to find this comic again (since i forgot it’s name and google is a big world). I came across this comic strip a few years back and realised how the scene of indian comics is changing in contemporary terms…. oh c’mon we’ll always welcome someone who throws the dirt right at our faces. But Rajneesh Kapoor is definetly good at it. I feel refreshed after reading his sense of sarcasm in this comic … and about the contemporary comics thing, you should also try the graphic novels category… like i said before, scenes are changing with Kari, the corridors and others in line. Go ahead :)!
